X-Ray Views of the TMJ

The Temporomandibular Joint is a challenging area to get good diagnostic radiographs.

TMJ X-Rays are commonly used to diagnose anatomic discrepancies, caused by TMJ disorders or traumatic injuries. A scan of the temporomandibular allows the dentist to see the articular tubercle, mandibular condyle and fossa and is useful to identify structural changes and displaced fractures, as well as assess excursion and joint spaces.

Clinical indicators include:

  • Trauma
  • Presence of joint noises
  • Trismus
  • Occlusal alterations

The scan is taken while seated upright with the isde of interest being closest to the detector and the head placed in a true lateral position. Depending on the projection, the mouth may be open or closed.

Our staff is well trained and experienced to make the scan as safe and comfortable for you as can be.
